It’s a shame that not much has been written about Desert Hot Springs near Palm Springs, CA. I am not sure if those who know about it don’t want others to be “in” on the values and fun of it all or the press just hasn’t discovered it yet. No matter, I’ve been there, experienced its rich treasures, and am here to tell you – it’s a great place to relax and rejuvenate. It hasn’t wrapped itself in the glitz and glamour cloak of its neighbor Palm Springs yet, but …it can certainly hold its own until that time comes and is worthy of a 3-day stay. If you’re the kind of traveler who can appreciate the raw essence of a natural jewel, this is the place for you.

Desert Hot Springs is built over one of the world’s finest natural hot mineral water aquifers. Naturally occurring mineral waters bubble to the surface making this a mineral bath and spa destination. There are over 22 unique (many family owned and operated) inns where you can Zen out, relaxing in polished marble resorts, retro-hip motels, clothes optional, or dog friendly retreats. Almost every inn has spa treatments available on property, so you can just roll from the comfy rooms, to the pool, to the mineral baths, to the spa treatments. No need to bring your own stash of designer bottled water as the city boasts pure and delicious award-winning municipal drinking water.

Aqua Soleil's GM, Sabine Pollermann in one of the spa rooms

I’d forgotten how good the health benefits of mineral-rich, hot springs can feel. Mineral waters around the world are famous for their healing attributes, and Desert Springs is no slacker in this department. What a treat to experience stress relieving natural heat, while minerals absorbed through my skin rejuvenating my body. Ready to relieve sore muscles and treat the stiffness that accompanies arthritis, the water in Desert Hot Springs is rich in silica, leaving the skin soft and smooth.

This destination is perfect for some serious alone time, girlfriend getaways, or some romantic rejuvenation. There are a variety of inns to choose from. My favorites are below, but whatever you’re looking for…it’s here for you. You may also like to enjoy some local “flavor” by trying Aqua Soleil’s light and delicious recipe for chilled avocado soup with tomato salsa.

Aqua Soleil: This was my host hotel for two days. Savvy General Manager Sabine Pollerman welcomed me with open arms. I must say the ground floor suite she assigned me was amazing. Just imagine your own mammoth Jacuzzi in your suite. By count I think I could have gotten at least 10 people in it. Also, lots of space to work on the computer or lounge on the couch. If I were writing a book, I’d like to start or end it here. The grounds were immaculate and inviting with a large swimming pool, two Jacuzzi’s and inviting well-kept outdoor conversation areas. Sabine tells me that her goal for her guests is for them, “To relax, refresh, and leave with abundant energy to return to their normal life.” The on property spa offers a variety of treatments and uses the upscale Body Deli products. Think Blueberry Fusion Micro-Scrub. Sabine encourages potential guests to check the property’s Web site for specials, and to call front desk manager “Ella” for any daily deals not shown on the website.

El Morocco Inn & Spa: A Moroccan inspired luxury inn in Desert Hot Springs, CA. run by owner Bruce Abney, one of the most gregarious inn keepers I have ever met. A day here is not only going to provide relaxation via the natural hot mineral water pool and spa, but when the evening rolls around… charm and deliciousness is the order of the evening. Between the delightful Bruce and the Inn’s signature cocktail, “The Morocco-tini” you’ll be raising a glass to pure relaxation. And hey…make sure you ask Bruce for the Sultan’s “Tent Tour.”

The "Dog Spa Resort", where dogs rule!

Dog Spa Resort: This is an inn created from the ground up for dog lovers. Dogs vacation free with their owners. The owner and inn keeper are outstanding guardians; you’re going to love this place. No size limits or breed restrictions. Soak, swim, and rejuvenate in some of the world’s finest hot mineral waters. Does it get any better? Yup! The pet nanny is on duty from 12 – 6pm to care for dog guests while you play off site. The rooms are large, clean and gorgeous. All you have to do is pack your bag, grab your significant others and get ready for a unique experience.

By Linda Kissam

I’ve been to many spas, but it’s the ones that offer their own special twist that makes a memorable experience. Spa junkies everywhere should be writing the following name down on a piece of paper … The Aji Spa at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa, in Phoenix, Arizona. It offers the world’s most authentic Native American spa services. If they sold spa condos there, I’d be interested, that is how good it is.

Aji, means “Sanctuary” in the Pima language. It takes its name from the nearby Aji Mountain located on the Gila River Indian Community which was once a sanctuary where women and children would go in times of war. Aji Mountain is still honored as one of the Community’s most sacred treasures and fittingly, Aji Spa is where sacred Pima and Maricopa traditions are still practiced and shared.

Jacuzzi at the Aji Spa

The spa is about a five minute leisurely walk from the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa (where I was staying – lovely rooms and views) , down a flat, winding lake side path. There’s something about that brief nature walk that sets the mood and anticipation for something very special to come.

A brief walk and a deep breath later, the spa welcomes me within a natural setting. The soothing scents surround me as soon as I walk in the door. The ancient Pima and Maricopa cultures are showcased throughout the spa in design elements, artwork, architecture and shared legends. No hurrying around here; just a lovely young woman greeting me and introducing me to my spa guide who takes me to the ready rooms.

The women’s locker room is striking. A private indoor and outdoor Jacuzzi are there when I am ready to imbibe. My guide shows me around, gives me a big fluffy robe and slippers, mentions the many free amenities available to me (scented lemon water to drink, creams, lotions, hair dryer, showers, tooth brush, etc). I am in heaven.

Aji Spa Nature Walk

We move on to the women’s quiet room which provides a couple of comfy chairs surrounded in native décor creating a centering, calming setting. This is a place to wait in privacy for upcoming services if I like, or I can go to a different waiting room for both men and women. Teas, lemon water, snacks and a muted décor call to me to rest, relax and rejuvenate, as I gaze out to a swimming pool framed by mountains. If this was all I did, I would have been happy.

I hear my name being called… so sweetly, so caring. Time for my 50 minute facial (Wihosha). I am impressed with the Spa’s use of the exclusive ARCONA Skin Care Line known for its high quality, luxury formulations and their unequalled ability to make a positive change to the skin through ingredients such as enzymes, antioxidants and amino. We have a brief talk about my skin type and my expectations and the treatment begins. I am filled with bliss.

I head back to the locker room refreshed and glowing. I linger a bit more in the communal room for lemon water and a look at other services I might try: Massage (Thagimun), Body Wraps (Hon), Salon Services Fitness & Recreation, and Exfoliating Body Treatments (Chipich) all call my name for another day.

On my way out of the spa I stop in the gift shop for some major retail therapy. I find the prices reasonable and my credit card able. I head over to the Aji Café. I see they offer a menu with healthy lunch options prepared on site by the Aji Café Chef under titles such as Replenish, Restore, Refresh. I order the Hand Picked Jumbo Crab Meat & Watermelon Salad (click for recipe) ($16) and The New Dawn Aji Spa Signature Cocktail: A refreshing blend of Elderflower Liquor, Riesling, Pineapple and Cranberry Juice, finished with a splash of Champagne ($12). Ahhh yes, ending a true experience with a refreshing treat. Does life get any better?

Maralyn and I have been to Sedona several times. During each trip, we’ve been struck by the majestic beauty of the red rock formations. When we visited the Enchantment Resort and Spa on Sedona’s edge, I felt as if I were literally a part of these formations. This resort is located so near to the rock overhangs that, seemingly, I was absorbed by them.

My own immediate objective for our visit was to experience a facial treatment at Enchantment’s Miiamo Spa. This was a noteworthy first type of treatment for me. Miiamo refers to itself as a destination spa, and the description is wholly justified. My treatment was labeled as a “Journeyman’s Facial,” with incredibly detailed steps.

A young woman named Dawn performed the treatment, she was knowledgeable and articulate about all its phases.

In summary form, nine steps were involved: encompassing cleansing, conditioning, serum applications, eye care, AHA applications, mask use, moisturizing, sunning, and what was called “up care.”

Step 1: Cleansing, involved use of a clarisonic pro brush, applying Oat Facial Polish. For males, this included a Clarifying Facial Wash, a form of body soap.

Step 2: Conditioning, called for a Lavender Honey Balancing Mist, also useful for subsequent after-shave applications.

Step 3: Serums, used a Carrot Seed Soothing Serum.

Step 4: Eye Care, was for twice daily applications of Vitamin K Brightening Eye Serum.

Step 5: AHA, was intended to be applied as directed. A form of “Mank Gel” was used by Dawn.

Step 6: Masks, could be labeled as “peels.” Here, a Sweet Cherry Brightening Enzyme Peel was the key to the masking process.

Step 7: Moisturizing, involved a male-only product known as a Daily Defense Moisturizer.

Step 8: Sunning, was intended for daily application and protection against the sun. The particular product was Lavender Protective Moisturizer.

Step 9: Up Care, for application as needed, was an Eminence product, Up Balm.

As a supplement to the nine steps, Dawn recommended an additional form of “Age Defense.”

For me, this Journeyman’s Facial for men was a new and very refreshing experience. When I agreed to start this journey into discovering spas, I had no idea I’d enjoy it. If you had asked me before the facial, I would have never imagined there would be so many steps. Yet, each one had a purpose and was relaxing. I hope to try it again, on a future visit to the beautiful Enchantment Resort and Spa.

Willow Stream Spas and Spa Partner Kerstin Florian introduce highly-developed Lifting Facial treatments…think of this new approach to anti-aging as “exercise for the face.”

Dante may have given vanity a bad name, but I digress — I want my skin to continue to look impossibly fresh as I age. More accurately, I want to reverse the aging process. And as my knowledge of how to anti-age continues to increase, so does my desire to achieve this through new technology in spa treatments. I am not talking about plastic surgery. In fact, I am a devout proponent of time – honored healing traditions — and now that beauty experts are converging natural methods with sophisticated technology, I can satisfy my desire for modern innovation while keeping true to my mantra: “[anti-]age gracefully.”

The Willow Stream Spa (the award-winning signature spa brand of the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts) is teaming up with Spa partner Kerstin Florian International to introduce a series of age-management Lifting Facials utilizing European style spa products and authentic, been-around-for-centuries, therapy techniques. Visible results are immediate, the relaxing and sensorial experience palpable…perfect for a 21st century busy-body like me. Bye-bye aging, “see-ya-later” fine lines. Hello immediate lifting and firming, restored dermal density, and increased collagen growth.

By: Jule Guaglardi, for JustLuxe.com

I don’t think I will ever forget the look on my husband’s face as the scene came into focus. The brilliant turquoise clarity of the water, and the topography of the land and surrounding islands were like nothing we had ever seen; sea life teeming just beneath the surface of the ocean and the luxuriously enchanting over-water bungalows that seemed to be part of the natural landscape. It was a combination of sheer disbelief accompanied by uncontrollable delight.

Bora Bora Lagoons (Photo Courtesy of Bora Bora Lagoon Resort)

Lost, and yet found in the Pacific Ocean’s eastern wing, resting within the Leeward Society Islands, gorgeous Bora Bora reigns supreme and untouchable in its effortless perfection. The jewel-like island beckons to lovers and island enthusiasts from her position in the stunning necklace that makes up the Tahitian island chain.

As we disembarked, we heard a lovely word, “Laorana,” the traditional Tahitian greeting accompanied by a warm smile and a gentle helping hand that never seemed to leave us throughout the journey. Our destination was the Bora Bora Lagoon Resort & Spa, a superb representative of the Orient Express Collection of hotels, “an operation known for unparalleled commitment to luxurious accommodations, personalized service, and award winning cuisine.”

Set apart from all of the other properties on Bora Bora and located on Motu Toopua (a much smaller island), the Bora Bora Lagoon Resort & Spa is a haven of luxury and tranquility unto itself, raising the bar on outstanding service despite its limited access to the outside world.

At the crest of Motu Toopua’s tallest hill is Hiro’s bell stone formation, an archeological treasure that rang out during religious ceremonies of years gone by. Today, despite the presence of the resort, Motu Toopua retains the sensibility of its sacred past; owned only by a limited number of local families, almost no one lives on the island. No roads have been carved, and the resort is connected to the main island only for the purposes of electricity to carry water to the hotel. All else remains untouched.

Want a complete Travel Quote including airfare, special hotel rates and FREE upgrades? Contact our Travel Specialist today! The 76 guest bungalows exude the natural beauty afforded throughout the region, with hardwood floors, bamboo, pandanau roofing, open-beam ceilings, tiki statues, and South Pacific-inspired fabrics. However Polynesian in its appearance, the property still maintains the little luxuries many of their guests prefer, such as internet access, air conditioning, an outrageously comfortable king-size bed, in-house DVD players, hair dryers, and so on. And although I am more of a “when in Rome” kind of girl myself, it’s nice to know the amenities are there for those who seek them.

The over-water bungalows were designed with our curiosity in mind, boasting glass-top coffee tables for fish viewing and feeding. We weren’t in our room for ten minutes before my husband vanished and then re-appeared from below to entertain me, along with a few scaly friends. The glass-top tables are an amazing touch, a constant reminder of where you are in the world. But the truth is, the views are amazing from everywhere. No matter where you look, you’ll find the most incredible shade of turquoise, fascinating sea creatures, and a collection of islands that defy any normal land topography you’ve ever seen.

The food here is outstanding: the Otemanu Restaurant is the culinary highlight of the resort. Enormous windows framing exceptional views of Mt. Otemanu and the engaging blue waters of the lagoon are the backdrop to this tantalizing culinary experience. Showcasing the chef’s take on local cuisine, the dishes are designed to dazzle the most discerning palate.

One of my favorite components to this great escape is the resort’s Maru tree-top spa, which opened in 2004, the only one of its kind in Bora Bora. The spa features six treatment rooms (four water front) and two massage rooms built into almost-mythic Banyan trees. The Tahitian-based spa treatments offered at Maru use herbs and remedies that have been practiced in the South Pacific for hundreds of years. This is truly a magnificent place— a life-altering experience affording your body and mind the opportunity to let go and believe again, like you did perhaps when you were a child, in paradise, Eden, and the idea that fairy tales can actually come true.

Other, perhaps less wondrous, activities on and around the property include tennis, swimming, fitness, volleyball, and billiards. Next are the water sports, such as snorkeling, windsurfing, Hobie cats, canoeing, and kayaking, all of which are a must. You also have the option, as we did, to participate in something a little more adventurous, like swimming with sharks. Here, in Bora Bora, you are reminded in moments like this that there is an incredible co-existence between man and creature— a natural synergy that is not only needed but embraced in a truly remarkable manner.

The Tahitian islands are about 11 hours from New York on non-stop service from JFK Airport. It may sound like a fairly arduous flight, but it’s well worth the effort!

The steak house dinner was not going to cut it this year and “Herself” was tired of the Portland, Oregon airport after limping home from yet another press trip. I had to find a special place take my wife for our 20th anniversary that was not too far away. Triumphantly, I announced to her that we were going to wine country in the Willamette Valley.

Interior of the Allison (Credit: Seattle-based firm GGLO, LLC.)

Debuting in 2009 and situated on 35 acres, this gold certified LEED complex is ultra-special in every respect. The owners, seventh generation Oregonians took great care to situate the building into the environment. Building green and utilizing local contractors, craftspeople and artisans, the Austin family created their own mini- economy in the area when times were tough. The hotel continues to generate jobs and support local workers. The Inn’s immense appeal according to Managing Director Pierre Zreik is not only to the independent traveler, “ We do a large part of our business as corporate incentive travel, corporate retreats and meetings. Intel and Nike love to come. Another facet is the wine groups. Since 1994 the number of wineries has increased from 75 to over 200 in the valley. The Oregon traveler makes up 48% of our business followed by California and Washington. “ All an easy flight or a drivable distance.

Our mid-day drive was easy; in just over an hour we arrived at the Allison Inn’s wood- beamed porte cochere. “Her Majesty” was happy with my choice because she smiled at the valet as he opened her door. She smiled again when she saw the house-made chocolate truffles Mr. Zreik had left in our room.

The Allison embodies “Northwest Elegance” with massive circular stairway, lustrous woods, natural vistas and expanses of stone and glass used throughout the private and pubic spaces. Simple materials and skillful design invoke a sense of well-being and communion with nature. Relevant artwork in multiple mediums reflect the areas wineries, farms and natural world. Take your own tour. In- room you can grab a self-guide book “The Art of The Allison Collection” describing the art and artist’s inspiration.

Allison Executive Chef Jin (Credit: John Valls Photography)

A tub for two was a most inspiring element in our “standard” room. I’d suggest that the room is a mini-suite, offering a small dining table for a romantic repast, a lounging area and a comfy bedroom with lanai. Owner Mrs. Joan Austin insisted on thoughtful built -in touches like the pull out table adjacent to the window seat so you can sit with your wine and enjoy the view to the vines growing on the hill.

The Allison, dedicated to well-being has saunas, steam baths, indoor pool, and a state-of-the art fitness room. Design in the Spa embraces the element of water in twelve treatment rooms and the private lounge areas. Here you don’t only drink your Pinot. “The Princess” was thrilled to learn that “Pinot Therapy” is available via the Divine Wine Facial or grape seed scrubs. For couples, duo massages or a “Candlelight and Roses” bath are offered.

After my steam, I looked forward to our dinner at Jory the Allison’s signature restaurant headed up by stellar Executive Chef Sunny Jin. At 6000 square feet, the restaurant seats 100 and has a chef’s table. The focus is fresh from their garden and local farms enjoined with wine creating a most casually elegant experience.

“Mon Marie, “ fully relaxed from her afternoon at the Spa looked radiant as she floated on my arm to a comfortable booth. Restaurant manager Tom Bean introduced himself and offered us a glass of 2008 Dick Shea Estate Pinot Noir from the Ribbon Ridge area of Dundee, here in the Willamette Valley. As we sipped this very complex wine and perused the wine list I told Tom that I thought he’d carry mainly Oregon wines. He answered, “Jory has over 800 labels of wine to offer from around the world. This is the local winemakers‘ living room. They want to sample wines from other countries, after all, they’re always trying each others wines like Pinots, Syrahs etc from Oregon and Washington state”.

..
I opted for the house made charcuterie to open. I realized too late that it was enough for two, but I had no problem enjoying most of it. “She” ordered Fresh Manila Clams with Andouille and a Chardonnay-Meyer Lemon Cream Crostini and proclaimed it “ tart, buttery and very fresh” between bites. I was busy trying to eat the gargantuan plate of pork rillettes, salumi, and pickled vegetables but fresh Alaskan Halibut waits for no man, so I surrendered to my fish. Savoring her Browned Gnocchi, with Lobster and Fresh Spring Peas “mia moglie“ told me she appreciated the light hand in the kitchen that allowed the food itself to shine.“

For dessert we sampled a local small production Privé Pinot Noir Port made by Tina and Mark Hammond right up the hill from the Allison. Rich ruby-red and silky smooth, it is one of Tom‘s favorites and a perfect match for the rich dark chocolate torte we shared. After the fist bite of chocolate my wife gave me another smile and this time, a kiss!

When traveling, discovering a local bathhouse and spa is always interesting. Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa in Hepburn Springs, Victoria, Australia, is surely near the top of the list.

The Daylesford and Hepburn Springs region has been recognized for its mineral waters since 1865. Its Mineral Springs Reserve is home to five mineral springs. The bathhouse was originally built in 1895 and recently renovated, making it one of the best. Included with the Bathhouse and Spa is a Sanctuary and The Pavilion Café. All of these are set in lush forested surroundings, with paths outside you can enjoy and explore.

My focus was on the inside, where you enjoy natural mineral water in a modern environment. The Bathhouse features both a relaxation pool and spa pool. This is the only area where children under sixteen are allowed.

The Sanctuary provides access to the Bathhouse and the spa couches, monsoon showers, aroma steam room, salt therapy pool, and a relaxation deck. Lying on the chaise lounges while jets massage your body with mineral water was very relaxing.

The Spa is in the original restored bathhouse and offers body treatments that focus on relaxation and renewing your body. Hepburn offers a variety of services, including mineral bathing, water therapies, body masks and wraps, body exfoliation, facial therapies, massage therapies, hand and foot therapies, and indulgent extras. Numerous packages are available with an assortment of treatments.

During my visit, the therapist determined my best benefit would be from an Eminence Vino Choc Facial. This sensory product provides anti-aging properties. Hungarian tokay is combined with champagne, orange essential oil, chocolate, and quince. This facial is known to be ripe in polyphenols, which fortify and tone to restore the skin’s natural luster and moisture balance. Since I use Eminence products regularly, I was pleased to have it reinforced as being an ideal choice.

Guests can use the Bathhouse for under $25. The Sanctuary ranges $55 to $75, depending on the day. Packages are available from $28 to $195. Spa services and packages range from $65 to several hundred dollars. From my experience, they appeared to be fairly priced for the value.

Between Hepburn and Daylesford, there are numerous hotel options. It is an interesting and relaxing area to experience for a few days. In addition, some exceptional dining opportunities are nearby.

Kitty’s mission statement is in part to “…offer a place of tranquility, rejuvenation . . .with extraordinary care.” Indeed, she does this on many levels. With two spa locations, and an exceptional staff, you will quickly understand why her personally selected and well-trained therapists are a not-to-miss event.

Our first stop was at the Avila beach spa location. There, we each enjoyed a Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage for 90 minutes. This healing massage is derived from Polynesians and healers of Hawaii. Therapists use continuous strokes, that enable your entire being to relax and allow energy released that has been blocked.

Kitty’s The Spa Central Coast Avila Beach is located at the charming board-and-batten oceanfront Avila Lighthouse Suites. This spa is a scaled down version of The Spa Central Coast in Atascadero. Special services are provided at the beachside spa and we enjoyed both locations.

After such a wonderful experience, we had to discover The Spa Central Coast in Atascadero, since it was just a short ride away. Right in the middle of wine country, we received the same gracious service, relaxing space, and a beautiful vibe.

The Signature Spa Foot Treatment at Spa Central Coast

We started with a Signature Spa Foot Treatment for 30 minutes and then had a 20-minute Detox Infared Sauna. This therapy provides heat radiated into the body and eliminates toxins and heavy metals. The radiant heat induces sweat and cleanses the body while burning calories. A 30-minute session runs $50. However, cancer patients and survivors have a special program worth asking about. For those undergoing chemo, the first treatment is free and additional treatments are deeply discounted. This is available at both locations.

Next came our regular treatments, which were anything but regular. Kitty’s Signature Facial was the most comprehensive facial, massage, and light therapy combo Michelle ever experienced and loved. While she was enjoying her facial, Maralyn was experiencing another Lomi Lomi massage.

For those wanting to stay closer to the Atascadero location, Kitty has a special package worked out with nearby Paso Robles Inn. The spa will shuttle back and forth, if desired. Also, the Carlton in Atascadero is on the corner of the same block as the spa.

For us, the special aspect of these spas was exceptional services at value prices, and naturally, Kitty. We were out of time and we wanted to try Kitty’s Haven Wine Bistro. For some extra fun with friends, you can party at the bistro’s patio behind the spa or go inside. For variety, pop over between glasses to Tuesday’s Jewels, next door. Its creative owner, Rachel, will make a custom necklace or select from something she has on display. These are all unique and affordable.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the La Costa Resort and Spa – a destination idyllically situated in sunny Carlsbad, California that’s revered for its well-appointed accommodations, world-class spa, fine dining and, of course, its two PGA-championship golf courses. Having heard much about La Costa prior to my stay, I checked in with admittedly high expectations. Suffice it to say the experience did not disappoint.

La Costa Resort + Spa | Carlsbad, California

Long cherished among Southern California residents and world travelers, alike, as a premiere vacation locale, La Costa Resort and Spa – with its breadth of amenities and top-notch service – is a worthy respite. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway for two or a fun-filled family vacation, this property has it all…and then some.

Accommodations a Plenty
This Spanish Mission village-styled resort, spread out over fully 400 acres of coastal foothills, boasts a total of 610 guestrooms, including ample villas and no less than 76 suites overlooking lush landscaping or its world-renowned golf courses. The rooms are outfitted with rich wood furnishings, luxurious fabrics, and leather accents along with oversized bathrooms replete with imported marble.

Located near the on-site shops, restaurants and spa, La Costa’s Plaza Rooms feature new flat-screen televisions, comfortable beds, high speed Internet access and an array of creature comforts. The Resort Rooms are offered with a choice of king bed or two queen beds, as well as a large flat-screen television, full size bath and glass enclosed shower, and outdoor courtyards. The Spa Rooms are located near the swimming pool areas and offer either a king or two queen beds with sitting areas. Decorated in the Spanish Colonial style, The Villa Rooms have king beds, authentic Saltillo-tiled floors and fireplaces along with flat screen televisions, a patio, a work area and sitting area.

The 57 available La Costa Suites for two are approximately 660 square feet and offer an elegant bedroom, a separate sitting area with a sofa sleeper and a flat screen television in each, as well as an oversized bathtub that opens up to the bedroom in view of the TV. The 28 available Family Suites for 4 to 6 guests measure a full 1,142 square feet. Family Suites are comprised of a La Costa Suite (with a king bed) and a connecting Resort Room (either a king bed or two queen beds), thus creating two bedrooms, as well as two marble-laden bathrooms and a sitting area.

The Villa Suites (one, two or three bedroom) range from 1,000 square feet to 2,200 square feet. These spacious suites provide residential-like comfort, and feature king beds, Saltillo-tiled floors, fireplaces, large flat screen televisions and sitting areas. These suites also have parlors designed for living with expansive seating and dining areas, a well-stocked gourmet kitchen with Viking appliances, a washer and dryer, and a beautiful patio. The Junior Villa Suites (one or two bedroom) have many of the same virtues but with less square footage. These rooms feature a king bed, marble bathroom, modern flat screen televisions and a private garden patio as well as an attached parlor and petite kitchen. The Villa Studios offer king beds, fireplaces, sitting areas, petite kitchens and washer/dryers along with beautiful décor and, of course, Spanish charm.

La Costa’s two-bedroom Presidential Suite is the ultimate in luxury accommodations, offering a spacious living room with floor-to-ceiling windows providing panoramic golf course views, a sitting area with fireplace, a dining area with seating for six, a wet bar with kitchen and four balconies. Each bedroom has its own sitting area and private bath. A third bedroom is optional.

Spa-sational
Few visit La Costa without indulging in a spa treatment or three. The Spa at La Costa is a Spanish-colonial style, Feng Shui-designed pleasure palace encompassing a whopping 28,000 square feet of indoor relaxation space and yet 15,000 square feet more outside. This spectacular spa has been awarded the Readers’ Choice Platinum List by Celebrated Living for four years in a row; the Best Hotel/Resort Spa in Southern California by Spa Magazine, and Top Spa Resorts for Golf by SpaFinder. And with good reason.

The Spa at La Costa has 42 treatment rooms, including VIP suites for couples’ treatments, like side-by-side massages, along with a shower, bathroom, fireplace, and private garden patio with a whirlpool tub. Treatment options abound, and include a range of massages, body wraps, facials and cutting-edge clinical treatments for the face. I myself had a massage treatment during my stay and can personally attest to the skill and professionalism of the technicians and the calming effect of the luxurious facilities.

Other spa amenities include a lounge pool, sunbathing area, and Roman Waterfall shoulder pounding massage showers, as well as men and women’s wet areas featuring steam, sauna, whirlpool, cold plunge, showers, and lounges. The Spa at La Costa is also home to a café perfect for leisurely lunches in your spa attire, impressive boutique for a dose of retail therapy, and movement and fitness rooms should you be so inspired. The full-service Yamaguchi Salon also located in the spa complex offers haircuts – including a Feng Shui cut, manicures, pedicures, and other salon treatments. The Chopra Center at La Costa complements the spa by offering a myriad of mind and body wellness programs. Here there are individual and family yoga sessions available.

Lauded Leisure

La Costa has eight heated swimming pools – one with a kid-friendly sandy “beach” and a toddler slide, a “Splash Landing” pool with two enormous 100-foot waterslides, an interactive waterplay zone, and five Jacuzzis all surrounded by upholstered loungers and shady cabanas. Unlimited Wi-Fi service is also offered in these areas. For those seeking to sunbathe kid-free, a separate Garden Pool area offers adults-only relaxation amongst gorgeous plants and florals. Also located poolside is the Splash Café and Garden Café restaurants offering light snacks, meals, non-alcoholic drinks and cocktails.

As an admitted fitness junkie, I was pleased to see the wealth of equipment at La Costa’s renowned fitness center. This bona fide health club has a strength circuit course, free weights, an aerobic studio, Pilates studio, spinning room and a bevy of cardiovascular equipment. Also on hand are personal training services and nutrition counseling that incorporate state-of-the-art methods and computerized printouts to evaluate a guest’s fitness level and provide customized exercise and nutrition programs.

For the tennis-set, La Costa has no less than 17 hard and clay courts – 7 of which lighted for evening play – with stadium seating. A seasoned staff of USPTA certified professionals is on hand for private lessons for adults and children and daily group clinics. Ball machine rental is available from the pro shop, where you can shop for gear and clothing to your heart’s content.

Among the most notable and celebrated features at La Costa is its two PGA Championship 18-hole golf courses designed by legendary golf architect Dick Wilson, which combine beautiful and traditional course designs to challenge and delight golfers of all levels. Practice facilities include a driving range and practice bunkers. The impressive pro shop offers the latest equipment and apparel. Exceptional golf instruction is available, including the La Costa Golf Academy and Golf Flexibility classes with Roger Fredericks, as well as full-fledged Golf memberships.

Of course, La Costa’s concierge is indelibly on hand to plan your day trips and tours and make recommendations and reservations as desired.

Kidtopia
Named the #2 Most Family Friendly Resort in the U.S. by the Travel Channel, La Costa embraces children and families from the moment they check in. First up is the VIK (Very Important Kid) gift bags doled out upon arrival. There are also numerous activities that change on a monthly basis appealing to kids of all ages, not to mention the “Vibz” game lounge. Designed for guests ages 10 and up and open from 10am-10pm, Vibz offers a TV lounge area, ping pong, skee-ball, video games, foosball, air hockey, billiards, X-box 360 room with five stations, and Guitar Hero on a pay-per-play basis. Numerous summer camp programs are also available for children, including Golf Camp, Tennis Camp, Spa Camp and Surf Camp.

La Costa’s “Kidtopia” Kids Club has half day, full day, hourly sessions and weekend night camp sessions for kids ages 6 months to 12 years. Designed by an architect who specializes in hands-on museums and small theme parks, Kidtopia is a beautifully designed 6,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, secure center comprised of land and sea elements with three distinct conceptual areas for infants/toddlers, bathroom independent 3-5 year olds, and 6-12 year olds. Kidtopia is jam packed with fun, offering small slides and soft climb items, books and puzzles, games and crafts, a seven-foot tree house with slides and cubbies, a movie lounge, personal high-tech entertainment stations, a pressure-sensitive light floor for games and dancing, and a 600-gallon saltwater aquarium with exotic fish. The center operates from 9am to 4pm on a daily basis with night camp on Fridays and Saturdays from 6-10pm. Full-day registration is $80 and includes activities from 9am – 4pm along with lunch. Half-day registration is from 9am – 1pm or 12pm – 4pm and includes lunch for $50. Night camp is $55 and includes dinner. Advance reservations are highly recommended.

La Costa is also baby-friendly, with available in-room diaper genies, baby proofing supplies, and complimentary cribs and pack-and-plays upon request among other infant-oriented resources. Other kid-specific amenities at the property include the Healthy Kids’ menu for restaurant and in-room dining, babysitting services, and swim lessons.

Food Fete

The Blue Fire Lounge

There are a number of fabulous dining experiences available at La Costa including its signature Blue Fire Grill, which is named one of Carlsbad’s beat restaurants. This 324-seat eatery with both an indoor and outdoor seating area serves Southern California styled food utilizing local fresh seafood, premium meats, and seasonal vegetables. For the oenophiles, the restaurant also has an extensive wine list. Designed by the renowned Puccini Restaurant Group of San Francisco, the décor at Blue Fire Grill resembles the Southern California Mission style carried throughout the resort. Its outdoor patio has fire pits and custom fountains as well as live music from Thursday to Saturday evenings. The interior features stone and wood floors, a green bottle fireplace, a hand blown glass flower fireplace wall, timber ceilings, and a fountain. Menu highlights include Frito Misto, Seafood Piquillo Pepper, Blue Fire Seafood Trio, Red Wine Braised Boneless Prime Beef Short Ribs, and the Seafood Stew.

The other notable restaurant on the property is Legends Bistro. With modern interior design aesthetic, Legends Bistro also has an indoor and outdoor seating area that overlooks the golf course. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this family-friendly restaurant focuses on comfort foods but with an international twist. Along with the regular menu, the restaurant also offers ayurvedic-style cuisine based on the Chopra Center’s philosophy as well as a kid’s menu. Also notable is the restaurant’s wine bar and private room for events.

Some Legends Bistro menu highlights include the Peking Duck Egg Rolls appetizer, Jack Daniels BBQ Baby Back Ribs served with Sweet Potato Fries, Seared Sea Bass, the Chopra Stir Fry, Butternut Squash Ravioli and Lentils with Basmati Rice. I ordered the Osso Buco and Cous Cous on special the evening of my stay, which was generously portioned, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection. For dessert, try the S’mores Pot Pie, which is a warm chocolate crust pie topped off with roasted marshmallows, the tableside prepared Root Beer Float, or the incredible Peach Cobbler I ordered and savored every bite of.

Other places to eat at La Costa include the Lobby Lounge, which offers appetizers, specialty drinks, beer, and wine. The Splash Poolside Bar & Café has grilled foods, snacks, salads, smoothies, and ice cream. The Garden Poolside Bar & Café has specialty drinks as well as grilled and fresh foods. The Spa Café offers a range of lifestyle cuisine, organic wine and champagne, juices, and smoothies. An impressive room service menu, is, of course, also available. Trust me, at La Costa you’ll eat well.

Perfect Packages
La Costa regularly offers vacation theme packages to fit a variety of interests, schedules and budgets. Trips for Two packages include a destination package, spa retreat package, and golf package. Family getaway packages include a Legoland package, unlimited activities package, and spa package (spa for adults and Kidtopia for kids). Stay for a quick vacation, or make La Costa your own through the purchase of a Villa vacation home.
